MEET OUR PASTOR AND HIS WIFE
REV. TOM & JENNY MILLIGAN
We welcome Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Milligan as the Pastor of our Congregation. Tom was installed and ordained as minister on Sunday, August 14, 2005. We Praise God that Pastor Tom & Jenny have joined us, what an exciting time for our church!
What is your calling in Life? Not just your job, or your role, or favorite leisure activities. These are all important, but what about your calling as a Christian. If you have been called by God, to be a Christian, what is it that you are to do? Or better said, who are you to be?
Who are you? Our first response to this question may be to give our name, but is that who we are, or simply our name? There is a multitude of other ways to accurately answer this question, but one meaning for response is "I am a new creation."
When we decide to follow Jesus instead of our old nature, our direction in life changes and our life purpose is changed. As children of God, our object in life is to glorify God. We no longer live for ourselves, but rather for God. The question is; how do we glorify God?
That answer I think is understood when we consider: What is close to God's heart, and therefore should be close to ours? 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 states our calling as Christians in these words. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God."
We are sent as Christ's ambassadors in this world with a message of reconciliation. The message is that a lost and broken world can be reunited with its Creator. This is a high task, one that is noble and daring. And each one of us is called to be a part of this ministry of reconciliation. But it does not all look the same for all people or at all times. For we can be reconcilers as we explain to friends about how God desires a relationship with them based on his grace. We can be reconcilers as we take this gospel to parts of the world and to people groups who have never heard it before. We can be reconcilers in our own families as we seek to love them and display to them the grace that we have been given.
How do we do this? It is not in our own strength but through the empowering of the Holy Spirit that we can be Christ's ambassadors.
We were made in the image of God, part of this image is to be God's presence in the world. At the fall, when sin separated mankind from God, the image was shattered (although not totally lost), but humanity is no longer how we were created to be. Sin has captured us and subjected us to death. But God reconciled us, that means that he offers us the gift to have our sins forgiven. Reconciliation has to do with overcoming enmity. For sin has not only separated us from God, it has made us his enemy, in the camp with sin and death God being holy hates sin and all that is unclean. Yet while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God made a way for us be right with him. This is through the blood of Jesus Christ. God's wrath that was properly aimed at us, his enemies was turned and poured out on Christ instead. Thus Christ's suffering took our sin away, and if we are found in Christ, then our sins are no longer there, and we have fellowship with God as we were made for, and we also are being restored in the image of God. Therefore we are Christ's ambassadors on earth. The message that we are sent with is to plead with the dying to be saved.
Death did not happen all at once when Adam and Eve sinned, but it was made inevitable, and therefore they were in the process of dying. Likewise when we are saved, we are given the new life in Christ, and are made new creatures, but again it is a process, where we put to death the old nature, and put on the new nature. We are as Christians becoming new. The process is guided by the Holy Spirit, who is powerful and effective.
To those who do not want to hear the call to be reconciled to-God, we should be-creative in using our imagination, to help them to see their need for Jesus. This is not done only through persuasive arguments, but also through a life lived as a new creation of God, and the joy in our lives that we have been forgiven and reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. We plead with people to find the life that we have been given. As we see dying people, some of them don't know that they are dying, and we have the message of life. That is the good news that we have been given, God has made a way for sinners like you and me, to be restored to true fellowship with Himself. Let us spread the good news!
